Unix Tutorial Digest – June 1st, 2018

Here is some light reading for the weekend: some news about Unix, a few useful articles and some tips from the past Unix Tutorial articles.

Unix News

• openSUSE Leap 15 is released
• FreeBSD 11.2-BETA2 is now available
• GNOME Foundation completed the migration to GitLab – check out gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME to see all the projects currently developed, tracked and managed via GitLab at GNOME.
• Sometime in mid-May Solaris 11.3 SRU 32 was released – this time focusing on updating the bundled software in Solaris 11

Software News

• Google Chrome 67 is released, apparently. A tutorial on compiling Chromium is coming up here on Unix Tutorial if you’re interested.
• git v2.17.1 is released with fixes for most recent security issues. One of the issues allowed remote code execution when connecting to a malicious git repositry, so it’s highly advised that you update!
• Emacs 26.1 released – I’m a fan of Vim myself, but hey. It’s been 8 months since previous release of Emacs, so there must be some useful improvements in 26.1.
• Speaking of it, Vim 8.1 was released quite recently as well, after 2 years in development. I hear, running command terminal (and seeing output) right inside your Vim window (tmux style?) is now possible.
• Wine (Win32 API for launching Windows apps on Unix and Linux platforms) released 3.8 and shortly after Wine 3.9. Incremental updates mostly, but interesting stuff around Vulkan API (Direct 3D 12)
